Newmarket's New Year has started badly was a loss to Crusaders 26-33. Nonetheless the Suffolk side was able to pick up two bonus points, one for scoring four tries and the other for finishing within 7 points of its opponents.
Having beaten Crusaders earlier in the season the Newmarket players and supporters had expected another win, but Crusaders scored its first converted try within three minutes and was 14 points ahead by the twelfth minute.
Newmarket rallied and on the 18th minute Dan Johnson charged over the line to score the home side's first try. With the last play of the first half Crusaders scored another try to take the score to 5-19.
Crusaders opened the scoring in the second half but on the 47th minute Max Bell, Newmarket's captain scored a well deserved try. Michael Reeves converted and took the score to 12-26.
Ten minutes later prop Mark Cooper drove over the line and again Micheal Reeves converted. 19-26. Another ten minutes and Newmarket scored its fourth try, again converted try Reeve to draw Newmarket level.
Unfortunately for the side Crusaders scored a converted try in the last five minutes ti end the game 26-33.
Newmarket's next match is away to Holt on 13 January, KO 2pm.
